“The Inches We Need Are Everywhere Around Us
A line from a brilliant cinematic speech by Al Pacino in “Any Given Sunday” to motivate and rouse his players in true Hollywood style. For those trying to create a new industry it truly sums up what we do every single day.
The image below shows the feeders on a knitting machine and to explain context, the holes the yarn is passing through are approximately 3 - 4 mm in diameter. Not exactly inches but millimetres that define the technology to change movement analysis for the next 50 years. The yarns form structures that allow Footfalls & Heartbeats to monitor and analyse movement in almost any setting. This analysis forms the basis of understanding behaviours and by simple extension the ability to “change those behaviours”.
Millimetres that will assist behaviour change.
These inches that we knit, sit upon or next to your body, often without direct contact, to allow invisible, comfortable, proactive and inexpensive sensor systems for health and care. Imagine if you will, an elderly relative at home wandering about their home, enjoying retirement and as a caring relative you can be alerted when their normal habits (and we all have them, no matter what age) vary enough to cause concern.
A quick call, a visit for tea and a chat and the underlying “issue” is determined and addressed. No waiting for an escalation into medical intervention or even worse a fall and hospitalisation. No cameras, microphones, no invasion of privacy, just a gentle nudge from the slippers they may wear or their favourite chair. No longer science fiction but commercial fact.
Thus we see the future, one or two millimetres at a time. Not as dramatic or eloquent as Mr. Pacino, but probably more impactful and useful to humanity.
As always, Do Good…
